Hilary Clinton and the YouTube Generation

I love YouTube , and so do millions of others around the world. The concept has been proven time and time again. It's a terrific marketing strategy, for the low price of producing a video. How much would someone pay to have a video potentially viewed by the entire world? But wait, its essentially free? When have we as individuals ever had that type of opportunity? Mix in someone in Hilary's position, a US Senator running for President, and you've now got the power to make a difference in your campaign for less than it costs to have a meeting with your staff. Sen. Hilary Clinton has used YouTube and other such oportunities to talk to the voters. Be it searching for a campaign song or reviewing the song entries , videos give her a direct way to promote indirectly, while entertaining those who watch the video. In her latest video, the Senator and President Bill Clinton are spoofing the last episode of the Sopranos . So not only are we talking about marketing to the fans of...

Walking with the Dinosaurs while drinking Ale

Image
People all over the world are traveling to Dorset and East Devon (in the UK) to walk with the dinosaurs . Thirsty? Have a pint of real ale at the Square and Compass Pub while you look at Pliosaur fossils in the pub's museum. Beer and Bones! What a concept! This just reiterates our previous discussion on using Anthropology to discover untapped products, ideas, or services. In this case, Archeology, (a sub-discipline of Anthropology) offers a unique experience to anyone interested in the past (and a bonus for those who like Ale). By tapping into this global market, the townspeople and local businesses have created a niche for themselves in the world. All they need is some advertising! It's a good thing that newspaper articles (free advertising) can offer tantalizing escapes for those in the busy world of 9 to 5 and living in the sea of ugly gray cubicles. It might not be our vision of Jurassic Park as we've seen in the movie by Steven Spielberg , but it sure beats meeti...

Anthropology and Flipping?

Image
We have always wanted to understand... Take for example a famous quote by one of our greatest Philosophers: "If you would understand anything, observe its beginning and its development." -Aristotle Throughout history we've practiced anthropology using what we know... Aristotle used Philosophy and today we have an understanding of scientific principals which are highly evolved forms of logic and reasoning. What the heck does this have to do with flipping? Well how can you flip anything in the world, without first understanding people. Understanding our desires and emotions? Don't sell a house when people are not buying, don't develop a product and try to find its niche. Use a customer base that's already in place, talk to people, ask them what they need. Develop a product, only after you know people will buy it. In his book The 4-Hour Workweek Tim Ferriss talks about using Google Adwords for testing product ideas. In a Scoble video interview he discusses ...

Unlock cultures from around the world

Unlocking mysteries of the worlds cultures allows us to compile the best of the best. Imagine all the natural medicines and healing techniques used throughout the world. Big Pharama has known this for ages, however anthropologists will continue to unlock knowledge and information about the world and we will all benefit. Many of the archaeological sites throughout the world have only uncovered a small fraction of what's buried. As we learn more about other cultures, our view of history changes. Is there something another culture has to offer which you can package and resell? Don't limit yourself to products, it could be information, or an experience! How many people would pay for the experience of a lifetime? Surfing the best wave, climbing the highest mountain, tasting the best food, the finest wines.

Globalization, good or bad?

Image
After reading about Globalization today, I couldn't help but think about how during World War II, Coca Cola obtained rationed sugar by selling bottles of Coke to the military. After shipping the bottles to Africa, Europe, and anywhere else GI's were posted, Coke basically positioned itself to become a global brand (intentially or not). The book For God, Country, and Coca-Cola: The Definitive History of the Great American Soft Drink and the Company That Makes It talks about Cokes role during World War II, and provides some interesting background on the company. Now you can have a coke and a smile nearly anywhere on the planet. Is this a positive or negative cultural change? When I was visiting some family abroad, I heard a lot of negative comments regarding Cokes activities in other countries, in the olympics, etc. However I still drink Coke (when I'm not drinking water or Mountain Dew!). I just don't see them as an evil empire, just a company with stock holders and a p...
